【WorkFace|WeFinland】01 – Anatolii|《

Hi, my name is Anatolii. I am an immigrant who had a dream—to obtain Finnish citizenship. Now, after living here for almost seven years, I have achieved it. To reach this goal, I had to learn either Finnish or Swedish. Because I love studying languages and I am naturally very curious, I ended up learning both. I am not a language teacher but an ordinary worker, so I talk about language learning from the perspective of a regular learner. Nevertheless, over the years I have studied several foreign languages, and at the moment I speak six languages at different levels. That is why I feel confident sharing my thoughts on this topic.Today I want to focus more on general tips rather than specific techniques, because in my opinion they are the most important.

This may sound obvious, but consistency is the key factor. Try to study whenever you can—ideally every day. Studying does not have to be intense or exhausting every single day, but if you learn even one new thing today, that already counts. In the long run, you will learn a great deal.

I myself studied Finnish in very different circumstances, often when I had very little energy left after work. I was already able to manage my work tasks in Finnish, so there was no strong external pressure to keep studying. Still, I always wanted to improve my language skills. That is why I set a simple rule for myself: if I don’t feel like studying at all, the minimum task is to sit down at the table and at least browse through a textbook. I realized that the first step is often the hardest one. It is better to tell yourself, “I will do something rather than nothing.” Very often, once I sat down, my motivation to study increased almost immediately.

Whenever I had a clear goal, such as passing the YKI language test, my motivation increased significantly and I was able to study a lot and very efficiently for that purpose.

A language is not just grammar and vocabulary—it is much more than that. When you study a foreign language, remember to use it as much as possible. This way you can learn a lot without it even feeling like studying. Curiosity is important: ask questions if you don’t understand something, write down interesting words, and practice them later at home. If a question comes to mind but you cannot ask it right away, write it down and ask your teacher or a friend later. Learning is more meaningful when you get answers to your own questions. This prevents uncertainty and helps you feel more confident when speaking a foreign language.

Consistency. Try to study something every day, even just a little. Over time, you will learn a lot, especially if you use the language in everyday life.

Determination. Set a clear goal, it will boost your motivation.

Curiosity. Be curious, find friends who speak the language, ask questions, and take notes.

I hope you liked my post and good luck with language learning!
